The Cabinet has given its approval to plans to make knife crime laws stronger. Helen McEntee, the minister of justice, brought a memo about the matter to the cabinet this morning.

According to her, the increased punishments will protect youth and appropriately represent the seriousness of the offense. Taoiseach Simon Harris, who pledged a prompt reaction to issues with law and order, has praised the action. The maximum punishment for major knife offenses would rise from five to seven years under the proposed modifications. The Cabinet also decided to extend the seven-year ban on importing knives and other similar weapons to ten years.

Along with her colleague, Minister of State James Browne, Ms. McEntee is advocating for increased authority for gardaí to impose orders regarding anti-social behavior.
