You can't actually say that Irish is a "race" or an ethnicity

McGuirk is wrong.

By reference to our legislation we can say that a race or ethnicity are those who share the same history and cultural traditions.

The law says an ethnic group is a group who share the same history and cultural traditions. In addition, the group may share one or more of the following things:

  • the same language
  • the same religion
  • the same literature
  • the same geographical origin

“Descent” is missing from McGuirks viewpoint. Exactly what a neoliberal would do when attacking Irish Nationhood.

Normally John McGuirk makes sensible statements, of course he can't be right about everything. I think he just gave an opinion, I also think he might row back on this.
But then again there are always outliers in everything.

For example are these people of Irish ethnicity.

Its PC to say that certain white ethnicities don't exist but try saying the same thing about the Native Americans or Aboriginal Australians you would never get away with it and liberals/sjws would be first to say that Native Americans etc are a distinct group of people who who have a right to exist and should be protected.

It was common parlance a hundred years ago to describe ethnic groups as a race, the Irish race, the German race etc, at the same time there was acknowledgement that Race also related to wider differences Caucasian, Mongoloid, Negr*id, Australoid. Then we had the concept of ethnic groups rather than Race, the diminution of the concept of biological similarity, even as science particularly Medicine confirmed that in "genetic clusters" certain patterns are indeed more prominent, one thing it is not is a social construct.

Race, Ethnic group, call it what you will, a rose is a rose by any other name.
