Without the fear of hell, would Christianity be as successful as it currently is?

Why not.. you got to stand by what you think , not what your told to think
There is no such thing as truly independent thinking since all knowledge is received from outside.
The phrase “ standing by what you think is meaningless “.
Nobody thinks anything but what was shoved into them from outside at some point in time.

... for it is doubtful Christianity would go from being a small sect within the Middle East to being a major world religion within such a short space of time and remaining so to this very day without it...
The success was due to its clear and simple idea or message, “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Because this teaching was simple, crisp, clear, and understandable, it enabled the broad masses to stand behind it, and in the end conquered the world. No doubt the moment Christianity assumed state power it began to cease being Christian. Christ's simple message, the straight-forward worldview that demanded such a genuine change of attitude from its adherents, was subsumed by dogma. This forum often gives up stark evidence of that.

Is it possible to be a real Christian if you are a closet Sodomite?

True, there is nothing worse than the two-faced Christian crew.

Obviously you disagree with Augustine's idea of the element of God's revelation from the inside that brought together fact and the value of that fact, and unified science with humanity, as well.

You are in effect asking is it possible for sinners to be Christians. As we are all sinners, it follows that only sinners can be Christians, sinners who acknowledged that this is what they are and who repent. I am not aware of the existence of any perfect human beings this side of Heaven.
