Washington will apply its Foreign Agents Registration Act to RT America, the channel has announced. The Department of Justice has given the broadcaster until Monday to register as a foreign agent, otherwise the channel’s head faces arrest and its accounts could be frozen.

The piece of legislation was adopted in the US in 1938 to counter pro-Nazi agitation on US soil.

Washington has made the decision to apply the act towards the company that supplies all services for RT America on its territory, including TV production and operations. Just over 400 entities are currently registered under the legislation, but it does not include a single media outlet.

In September, the DOJ sent a letter to the company, claiming it is obligated to register under the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) due to the work it does for RT. The law demands the disclosure of the channel's confidential data, including the personal data of its staff. The move "will have serious legal consequences"and "compromise the safety of [RT] employees," the Russian Foreign Ministry previously explained.

RT's editor-in-chief, Margarita Simonyan, said on Thursday that the timeframe provided for the company by the DoJ is a "cannibalistic deadline." She previously said that the channel was being forced into "conditions in which we cannot work" in the US, and called Washington's demand an attempt to "drive [RT] out of the country."

Simonyan had said the decision put freedom of speech in the US under question. RT has been under pressure for showing the American audience "a different point of view," the editor-in-chief added.

That's preposterous and a shame. RT is by and large a much better news source than all the large American media outlets.

This is the elites that both Rep and Dems represent trying to wrestle back control of the political narrative, and what's so sad about it is due to their previous mass-anti-Russian brainwashing more people than not will think it's a great idea, without realising that it's these elites and the corrupt system that's the problem, not RT or Putin, and this is only another step on the way to consolidating their power over the same fools who'll think it's a great idea.

Absolutely right. They use bygone hysteria of the Cold War as subterfuge to go after the Russians, when in essence they loathe the Russians' goring their sacred oxen: NATO, globalism, homosexualism et al.

I'm only surprised they took this long. If the American regime is going to uphold the fiction that Putin imposed his candidate on the White House then that's a very serious matter, a police state sweep is intuitive to that.

This does have its upsides geopolitically speaking. The American regime is confirmed as a police state, RT will still be accessible online and Putin will be emboldened to purge more of the American destabilisation outlets from Russia.

Although I know what you mean by this, there is no upside to worsening Russo-American relations. We've riled and humiliated them ever since Yeltsin played the part of our useful idiot and through our moving NATO to their doorstep. It's wishful thinking, but were the U.S. to clear the air with Ivan, we could smash globalism in a month of Sundays.

I hope the other shoe never drops, because we're in deep, deep trouble if and when it does.

Isn't it ironic that it's now the Democrats who are stoking up the McCarthyist hysteria against everything Russian.

Scottish ex MP Alex Salmond, is now getting his own show on RT

He was just on pointing out that what he had to say (sometimes critical of russia) was never censored in any way by RT
and how nonsensical the witch hunt against RT and all who appeared on it really was.

Might be an interesting show. You can catch it Thursdays.

My thoughts exactly. They of all people ought to know better, but they no longer represent the working class. They now represent the third world's wretched refuse, subversives, perverts and the super rich.

The ex-soccer player: Stan Collymore is due to launch a show on RT too.
