Ticket touting ‘a threat to World Cup bid’ – Quinlivan

Sinn Féin TD Maurice Quinlivan has said that allowing his Ticket Touting Bill to progress through the legislative process is a matter of urgency as Ireland prepares its bid for the 2023 Rugby World Cup. This is in response to the Government trying to stall Deputy Quinlivan’s Bill which would root out the problem by imposing strict fines on those who try to take advantage of event goers.

The Limerick City TD said:

“The IRFU has prepared a fantastic bid for the Rugby World Cup 2023, which has the backing of Government, civil society and many others, including ourselves in Sinn Féin.

“It is now up to legislators to ensure that we do our part in having our ducks in a row to increase our chances of securing the bid. This includes making sure that ticket touts do not risk spoiling the bid for us by allowing a murky grey market to exist that may taint our reputation, which has already taken a hit by the Government’s feeble attempts to address the problems surrounding the Rio 2016 ticket fiasco.

“Hosting the 2023 Rugby World Cup could be worth around €2 billion to the Irish economy according to Dublin Chamber of Commerce, and would be a source of immense pride to Ireland as a nation of sports fans who have travelled all over the world following their teams to be able to host one of the world’s biggest tournaments.

“To this end, I am calling on Fianna Fáil to work with me and not accept the Government’s attempt to postpone the Bill by nine months, at this critical stage in the World Cup bid, when it comes to a vote on Thursday.” - Ticket touting 'a threat to World Cup bid' – Quinlivan | Sinn Féin
