The Julian Assange thread

Journalist Julian Assange has finished his sentence for skipping bail
yet is still being kept in prison awaiting an extradition order to the US.

The west lectures China on it's human rights yet in the case of Julian Assange we have indefinite detention without charge.
First in the embassy for 7 years. Then again after his sentence on a minor charge has been completed in a british prison.

Assange has done us all a great public service by shining a spotlight on the activities of those in power.
We should support him. If Trump had any balls he'd drop the extradition order!

Godsdog,

I cried over the treatment of Chelsea Manning. She was not allowed to attend her mother's funeral. They might not have wanted the media to see her in chains???

This is shameful even by Guardian standards.

The US is Using the Guardian to Justify Jailing Assange for Life. Why is the Paper So Silent?

Calling this guy a journalist is a stretch. He is very much a hacktivist that even turned into a useful idiot for Putin to get hacked information into the public domain for the US election. But should any of that be criminalised and be the subject of an extradition - absolutely not. The actual 'crime' he is accused of is that he gave assistance to Manning to help him hack the cables is really only a barely disguised charge for the embarrassment suffered by the US in the leaks.

The most important secret Assange revealed has been the blatantly obvious connection between government and media.
The lack of critical media reporting is monumentally dangerous.

Reminds me of that old joke.
During the cold war an American showed a Russian their newspapers and the 'freedoms' they enjoyed.
The Russian was aghast.
''In Soviet Russia'', he exclaimed, ''We have to torture journalists to force them to write our propaganda''.

Do you think the UK is dragging their feet (thank goodness) to see if Joe Biden becomes POTUS and rescinds the extradition request?

Better to let Julian Assange go.
