In my view, Richard Pryor was the all time greatest stand up comedian. He was always political, but his politics was expressed by releasing the repressed jouissance of his people - and nobody laughed like his own black people when he paraded their falls and foibles for all to see on the stage. Unlike many of our Irish comedians, who parade the Irish for the English to laugh at, Pryor presented black people to themselves - and if white people got it too, that was good, but not necessary. Many of you will have seen his filmed stand up routines, but, for me, this LP recording from 1976 is Pryor at his very best.
