On This Day in 1950 at 2:00 PM the 1st flight from Baghdad, Iraq to Israel departed as part of Operation Ezra and Nehemiah
which airlifted 120,000 Iraqi Jews to Israel. The immigrants’ possessions, estimated to be worth about $290m today, were
confiscated by the Iraqi government.
Ceremonies to mark the sacrifice of those who died in the D-Day landings, 75 years ago, were held in Normandy.
The landings, in northern France, were the largest combined land, air and naval operation in history and marked
the start of the campaign to liberate Nazi-occupied north-west Europe.
