Over the hills and far away
He put his indelible mark on the genre he created. He was the other side of the coin from the sometimes innocuous and saccharine styles of the Beach Boys and Jan and Dean, and he revolutionized surf music by his aggressive, soulful style and use of reverb, 100-watt amplifiers, non-Western scales and Middle Eastern flavor (thanks to the influence of his Lebanese father and uncle). I saw him umpteenth times and he knocked the crowd dead every time.

He also was a kind and gentle soul. I found that out after having met him a time or two. Farewell to an icon and a true legend.
