I expect very few Irish people are quite aware of just how truly insidious Vatican politics are.
Pope Benedict instructed his priest ,a Fr. Crotty of the Dominican order, to preach to Irish soldiers that their duty was in loyalty to the English Crown
The event occurred in Germany in 1917 as Casement inspired agents sought to raise the Irish Brigade from imprisoned Irish soldiers.
This gross manipulation of a soldiers oath of allegiance must be condemned.
Irish soldiers fighting in WW1 in my opinion were entitled to transfer their allegiance to the Irish insurgency that sought Irish independence from Britain.

The Vatican in 1917 was deeply hostile to Irish independence viewing as it did all Irish Catholics as spiritual canon fodder for the re-conversion of Protestant Britain..

Fr, Crottys deeply hypocritical and manipulative sermon no doubt penned by Pope Benedict can be read in the link below.

Throughout history the Catholic Church as an institution, both in Ireland and in Rome has always been indifferent at best and outright hostile at worst to those who fought for Irish independence and towards the native Irish culture in general, although some priests have been notable exceptions to this rule. Even though the Irish were historically some the most proudly and staunchly Catholic people in Europe, their loyalty to the church was never rewarded or reciprocated.

Casement wasn't around in 1917.

Rome has always been in league with power, to the detriment of ordinary folk under it's boot.
Why is this any surprise?

If you really insist on fooling yourself and believing in a god then foster your own direct relationship with it
and cut out the corrupt middle man. He's completely superfluous and history shows he will likely abuse the position time and again.

This is not a thread about religion (which you seem to have on the brain a bit)

So you are saying the Vatican should take its orders from the PIRA Army Council who murdered nuns and who taught the FARC narco terrorists to murder Colombian Catholics. The Catholic Church gave Ireland its schools and hospitals. PIRA kidnapped and mutilated people. The Tans murdered at least three priests. You have probably never heard of Archbishop Croke, Archbishop Thomas Walsh or the Provo priest from Crossmaglen as TO'F was called.
Ireland, with the exception of a few decades ending with Down's first all Ireland win., has been an irrelevance to the Catholic Church. There are more Catholics in England than in Ireland. And then there are a chunk of them in Poland.
If the Catholic Church wanted to help Ireland, it would refuse access to all Sinn Feiners and their sprogs.
