Well, I would say politics based around the middle class is vulgar, but I did not actually mean this in the pejorative sense. The grand narratives, from Plato, through Marx, never seem to have understood the value of musicality. The problem with purely functional thought is that it does not take in to account what genuinely tasteful persons value, or that there can be tainted views amongst those who feign rebellion. Flaubert's concept of bourgeois culture reeks of Benjamin's later forays in to degenerate art. If you base politics on mere rationale, the state will divorce itself from the most vital element of its folk.
