The 1934 Bugatti 57. The supercharged 4 liter engine gave 200 horse power and a top speed of 120 miles an hour. Ralf Lauren bought one of these recently for 40 million dollars. Certainly one of the most beautiful cars ever made. The body is of an aluminum composite called Electron, which was being experimented with at the time by the aviation industry.

The 1930s were a fantastic time for car design. Concepts such a the VW Beatle with it rear engine and air cooling weren't surpassed for another 40 years. One of the reasons German engines were so good in the 1930s was that Germany was prevented from designing aircraft engines by the Treaty of Versailles - so German manufacturers made high end car engines with a view to being able to convert them for combat aircraft. Btw. these days all F1 cars are petrol \ electric hybrids - but Ferdinand Porsche's first car design was precisely that - and electric \ petrol hybrid racing car which he designed as far back as 1900.

Bugatti have done a one off tribute car to the Bugatti 57, called “La Voiture Noire." It's based on the Chiron, but has a 1500 horse power 16 cylinder engine. You see the seven exhaust pipes, which is a feature the most high end of the Bugatti 57s had too.
