1. Plonker
2. Meat and two veg
3. On the horn
4. Codpiece XL

In view of NPHET and government's determination to turn coronavirus into a national willy waving contest, please could all staff familiarise themselves with revised emergency response levels:
1. Plonker
2. Meat and two veg
3. On the horn
4. Codpiece XL
5. Hung like a donkey

Travel restrictions would have been of value in the initial wave to flatten the curve but they are not a solution. Attempts to suppress Covid by travel restrictions and lockdowns will only postpone its sweeping over the population, they will not prevent it eventually sweeping through the population. New Zealand is not a good role model for anyone.

The evidence for this is the experience of Eastern Europe. An early introduction of restrictive measures ensured that that region was initially less affected by Covid than Western Europe which was slower to introduce lockdowns and travel restrictions.

But now it can be seen that all that did was postpone the pain - Eastern Europe is now having the same experience that Western Europe had six months ago.
If New Zealand ever attempts to re-open itself to international travel it will immediately find itself in the situation West Europe was in last March/April.
The real winner is clearly Sweden - based on all the evidence available so far their policy of imposing minimum restrictions with occasional fine tuning can now be seen the course of action everyone should have taken. Sweden will end up with a death rate no higher than anyone elses but without having endured the society and democracy and economic destroying effect of all of these arbitrary restrictions issued by decree by rulers enforced by Police force that we are seeing.

Many Eastern European countries which locked down early and escaped lightly from the first wave of Covid-19 are now being battered by the second wave, in a reversal of Europe's East-West divide.

Eastern Europe is seeing cases spike by up to 2,000 per cent compared to the spring, suggesting that countries which kept the virus at bay in March and April merely postponed the onslaught rather than avoiding it altogether.

More worryingly, while death tolls in Britain, France and Spain have been more muted in the second wave, many countries in Eastern Europe are seeing more fatalities than ever before - raising fears for their vulnerable health systems.
...
The resurgence raises fears over what will happen when sealed-off New Zealand finally opens its borders again, after crushing the virus so far with only 1,880 cases and 25 deaths all year.

Meanwhile, Sweden has seen only a mild change between its spring and autumn outbreaks, bolstering its claims that its no-lockdown policy is an effective long-term strategy against the disease.

Great post. Some very intriguing observations.

LETS GET SERIOUS ABOUT THIS PROBLEM.

HOW TO END THE PANDEMIC IN IRELAND
Control the movements of those infected and you whittle down the spread of infection to easily manageable levels where life can return to some semblence of normality.

The only way to control movements of people is to find out who is infected or suspected to be infected and force them to isolate and quarantine until the infection has passed usually 14 days.
Forcibly test every person suspected of carrying the disease.
A failure to comply will result in a mandatory quarantine of 14 days.

Any person breaching a quarantine/isolation order will receive a 5000 euro fine and or 6 months in prison.

I'm convinced there is something wrong with your short term memory. Do I need to repost all the studies from the mask thread?

Hell I wouldnt even bring it up if you weren't so incorrect.

Why do you invite ridicule?
Please do and we will see how you are completely innocent of any intelligent reasoning.
