Shocking images have shown the aftermath of a mine collapse in Co Monaghan.

An investigation is under way after part of a disused mine collapsed in Co Monaghan.

A local school was evacuated and some playing fields at a nearby GAA club subsided.

An exclusion zone has been set up around the mine as a precautionary measure.

A spokesman for Magheracloone Mitchells GAA club said the club's ground, community centre and pitch is completely out of bounds.

Assistant PRO Jim McMahon said the damage is being assessed but nobody was hurt.

He said the collapse was on the club's land and an investigation is under way by the company that owns the old mine.

Surely there has to be some sort in questions asked here, how is it an old disused mine is allowed to near any residential or public areas? What came first, the Mine or the school and GAA pitch?

Thank God nobody was hurt.
