Wait for a few weeks and we will get a feel-good piece written by journalists telling us how the family have now bee given a 5 bedroom house in Dublin 4, and we should all be thankful for them.

Its important to point out that under the refugee/geneva convention a person is only entitled to refugee status so long as their home country is unsafe to live in , once it is safe they can be returned home .

I think the government are missing a lot of big opportunities to send people back to countries which are now safe to live in and thus free up the much needed housing stock and reduce social welfare spending etc at the same time

Like most of the asylum regulations, that is ignored.

According to the Dublin Convention, an asylum seeker should claim asylum in the first safe country they land on (meaning we should have none here) - a ruling which has been ignored wholesale. When Italy was swamped with "refugees" and a change to that regulation was called for, instead of doing something, anything, sensible, they decided to change it to, in effect, an asylum seeker having to claim asylum in the first country which took their fingerprints and ID - of course the Italians got wise, and refused to fingerprint anyone, and just send them north. Meaning of course, that now not only can "asylum seekers" head anywhere they want, they also can't be tracked or vetted.
