Magic begun in Babylon & was found, later, in Assyria, Chaldea, Aegypt, China, Greece & even, but to a lesser & more criticised extent, in Rome. But while experimental science is an attempt at rational thought, magic was the first attempt at sophisticated thought at all & it can be said that science is simply magic's offspring & it is often the case that what is magic is often rather scientific itself.

The term seems to have undergone a transmogrification within the mass mind. Magic comes from the Greek term magi, which referred to the wise men of Babylon. Magic is then simply an early attempt at science by wise men.

It is also of note that anyone who fully understands the history of magic has never felt the need to replace it with the scientific platitudes of later eras. Eliade & Evola come to mind. It is probably the case that much of what is found there is sufficient to satisfy our appetite for wisdom, which needn't be supplemented by later malarkey.

You should check out the work of David Livingstone and his book The Dying God. He studies ancient Babylon and it's influence on the Jews who were exposed to the paganistic beliefs and practices of the caananites. They carried forward the mystical teachings of the Babylonian High Priests and the Chaeldaen Magi. He puts forward the theory that the Kaballah can be traced back to 6CBC as it is a preservation of these teachings that make up the esoteric heretical version of Judaism. He links the Kaballah with Freemasonary, the Occultic and Hermetical movements.

Wrong.
That's illusionism, not magick.

Magick, the intentional manipulation of reality through extra normal means, is very real.
