'A remarkable journey...' - Lucinda Creighton steps down as leader of Renua Ireland

Ms Creighton said setting up a political party was a “remarkable journey” that did not end the way she planned.

The former Fine Gael minister failed to return any candidates in the General Election despite entering the election with three TDs and a senator.

She paid tribute to her party members and especially praised Offaly County Councillor John Leahy who she said showed “qualities of leadership that our country is crying out for”.

“I am extremely grateful for those who made it possible, and the supporters and members across the country who shared in our common ideals,” she said.

“It's time for me to move on from leading RENUA Ireland and allow new voices to be heard.
I leave my role as party leader perhaps more humbled, but no less proud of all that we have achieved together and what can be accomplished in the future,” she added.

Where now for Lucy, will she turn her back on Politics and pursue a career elsewhere?

She was a great TD for Fine Gael, but her convictions and beliefs couldn't match those of the party. She did fantastic work for the country when in Europe.

I fear this is also the end of Renua as a party, Surely there is no comeback fro them now and their days are coming to an end.

Renua was a pointless exercise from the start. Even the name of the party was utterly crass.

Her stand defying the party whip was commendable. She then set up some neo-liberal rich-person's party in an era of crippling austerity. That's just displaced from reality.

She is stuck in the wrong country, one filled with people who do not wish to be independent but instead wish to be dependent on others.

Yes, she would be much better killing Native Americans in the 19th century.

There was no opposition to TIPP. No opposition to the EU, Creighton being an outspoken Europhile. A low tax regime would've further threatened services, so that prospect will be unappealing to the electorate.

There's nothing there for a socialist, nothing there for a libertarian. Even the pro-lifers got shortchanged as most of their candidates opposed the 8th.

Creighton is a sincere enough character and means well but it's rare I've seen a party so out of touch with any political reality. She had that party positioned in abject political limbo and was utterly oblivious to it. She was good to do as well she did quite frankly and if you take the votes in their totality they weren't that far from the better positioned SD types. But still Renua is a nonsense party.

If people were looking for an alternative outside of Fine Gael and Labour, and the Government Tink Tank were well aware of that, and if I was really paranoid, I would say it was a calculated pointless exercise, designed to mop up some of the Dissent coming from conservative Ireland and the middle-ground..

Denis Naughten (born 23 June 1973) is an Irish politician. He is a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Roscommon–Galway constituency. He sits as an independent TD, having lost the Fine Gael parliamentary party whip in July 2011..

Naughten was appointed as Minister for Communications, Climate Change and Natural Resources in Enda Kenny's Fine Gael/Independentminority government after two months of negotiation following the 2016 general election.

Every second Tom, Dick & Harry has muscled in on the Gregory vote, and are claiming that they are Independents now..

I don't know about that. There probably is a space for a conservative party that rejects the cronyism and criminality of Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil, but Renua wasn't it. They never had the resources of quality people and money to really be a contender.
