But why would a talented famous draughtsman like Leonardo portray a major catholic saint in that way?
Answer: Leonardo was a degenerate.
Conclusion: degenerates though talented rarely produce great art. Da Vinci is a prime example of this truism.
People often conflate technical ability with artistic talent, which is something else altogether. There are countless people out there with superb drawing/painting skills but very little artistic vision. These artists are often extremely bitter as they cannot understand why they're not taken seriously by their peers. Artistic understanding, knowledge and vision are equally as important as skill but many fail to realise that.

The you have the other side of the coin where many artists (modern) have vision but no skill which is just as bad

Nope.
If you are a catholic avoid everything to do with antipope francis who spends considerable amounts of his time promoting homosexuals.
Does the fact that he is in that hallowed position now negate the meaning of this common phrase.

“Is the pope a Catholic?.”

Its a ghastly painting created by a thoroughly overated homosexual artist who effeminized everything in sight to the point of ridicule.

True to form his religious work is entirely devoid of any grace including the awful Last Supper on which millions was spent in restoration.
Do not go to see it.
if you look at the holy family painting you will see Mary child and Joseph in the foreground and several clearly homosexual men in the background some of which are having a row clearly about the affection of one man for another .
if you look and you do not need to look carefully you will see that all the ground they stand on is sterile and there is a border or low wall and a figure we are told is john the Baptist as a child leans forward into the fertile world of the holy family while his feet remain in the sterile homosexual world --there is no mistaking the picture of good and evil portrayed like no other artist on earth --and never equalled in its simplicity for the simplest mind to grasp and understand and combined with the great art involved in its depiction for the sophisticate .
I got the message --look it up and get the message . bugs

Which painting are you referring to?
Is it the OPs image or a different one.

I don’t wish to get any message whatsoever from the perverted world of the homosexual but as there is some argument concerning Da Vincis orientation I would appreciate any evidence that helps settle the matter.

I was typing from memory --I have been to the Uffizi in Florence and they have an entire room devoted to lenardo and I forgot that down the hall is the michaelangeelo painting known officially as DONI TONDO but known to us as the holy family painting --probably one of the most unsettelling paintings I have seen--I from memory thought it was in the lenardo room .
it has the most startling blue and the painting almost comes at you out of the round frame --the homosexual men in the background amplify the image in the foreground powerfully --it is the most stunning painting I have seen and I did the mad thing I paid over the odds in the Uffizi shop for a great copy which I have framed and I look and wonder at it almost each day . bugs

That's some painting. Mary looks like she's straight out of a Socialist Realism painting.

thanks tadhg for up loading this I do not have the brains to do it -- if you look you will see there is a physical wall or border between the holy family and every one else .
the young figure looking over the wall is stated to be the young john the Baptist .
the area in the background has no vegetation --no colour completely sterile except for the gay men who are given a feminine appearance and stance and are clearly having a lovers quarrel .
joseph is portrayed as too eldery to have fathered the child and his arms are not visible to further deny him strength and very strangely marys hand appears to hold her hand in a very strange way as it is expected your eyes are drawn to this .
any thoughts out there . bugs
