Leo Varadkar, the leader of Fine Gael and Taoiseach, has announced his resignation.

Speaking in Leinster House, he declared that his tenure as Taoiseach had been the most rewarding of his life, with Ireland evolving into a more progressive and equal society that welcomes women and LGBT individuals.

He declared that he would step down as Fine Gael leader immediately and serve as Taoiseach until a new leader of the party is chosen during the Easter break.

According to him, his successor will have two whole months until the June municipal and European elections.

"My reasons for stepping down are both personal and political ... I believe the re-election of this three party Government will be the right thing for the future of our country," he added.

"After careful consideration, and some soul searching, I believe a new Taoiseach will be better placed than me to achieve that.

He added that "after seven years in office, I don't feel I'm the best person for that job anymore".
