Iran was a much better place before the Muslim revolution though Tadgh.

Personally, I'd prefer the Shah in many ways, but he messed himself up by being too close to the Yanks one day - and trying to be independent from them the next. If you're going to be a Yankee dog, you have to be like the Al Saud family - always knowing your place and always knowing that your master can kill you any time you displease him.

Basically, they made a deal in the 50's whereby the US would provide military protection to Saudi Arabia in return for cheap oil. But, one little caveat the Saudis insisted on was that under no circumstances whatsoever were the Yanks to interfere with the Saudis religious affairs.

We get an increasingly smaller amount of oil from the Saudis luckily, but they are part of this bizarre American/Israeli/Saudi triangle, which really began to flex its muscles during the first Iraq War. It's like one concerted Middle East destabilization project. They hold $117 billion of our debt, but that pales in comparison to the Chinese and Japanese.
