"While there are still questions about North Korea’s ability to steer missiles on long-range flights, the conceivable range of these ICBMs now puts the entire continental US in their sights. That doesn’t necessarily mean the North Koreans can hit those targets, but it makes it at least conceivable.
That makes US threats to “totally destroy” North Korea less and less practical, with a growing probability that North Korea could carry out devastating retaliatory strikes in response to a US attack.
This has, of course, been North Korea’s goal for years, with officials very public about wanting to have a retaliatory capability against the US that would blunt the regular US threats of attacking. Now having reached that, or nearly so, the US may be obliged to approach talks with North Korea on a more even level."
Sure, in the Internet age, the 24-hour news cycle and lightning fast dissemination of information and with a White House that leaks like the Titanic, Red China and we can keep this "deal" under wraps? I call bullshit.
Kim is perfectly fine. The Americans will cooperate with the Chinese in trying to hassle NK along the edges. That's about it.
What the Chinese won't be doing is:
Doing anything that would see an American Army nor a pro-American army move up to the Chinese frontier.
Doing anything that would risk unleashing chaos within the Norkie hinterland, something that would ultimately embroil China itself. The Chinese are neither gamblers nor adventurists.
Y'know, it's amusing. The Americans have created the most fortified, militarised sector on earth around East Asia yet they are completely unprepared for little Kim and his antics. It's all just a war profiteering racket at the end of the day.
The Chinese are worried about the South China Sea and the probable oil there. Korea is just a pawn, they are not worried about it at all. A prosperous united korea with the Americans brought home is their accepted ideal solution imo.
China won't abide a pro-American army on their frontier. The South China stuff is as much as about not being encircled by the pro-American bloc than anything else. If a pro-American army appears on the Chinese frontier that will jeopardise China efforts on the SCS front as resources will have to be diverted to counter the American threat.
The Chinese also know that the Americans are very schizophrenic and any sweeping "deal" isn't worth the paper it's written on anyway. Trump could well have one of his hot flushes easy enough.
