Preparations are under way for the broadcaster's funeral which will take place on Friday at 12pm at St Mary's Pro- Cathedral.

RTE will broadcast live coverage on television and online.

Beginning at 11.30am, Bryan Dobson will present the special programme featuring coverage of the funeral mass.
I don't think Gaybo would be happy.

I had to avoid the radio today for fear of being bombarded with the embarrassing, mawkish hero worship of Saint Gaybo (it went into overdrive the day he died, but it seems to have cooled off a bit now).

Add to that the fact that most of the dunces in the media appear to be doing their best to turn him into some sort of liberal saviour who rescued us from the Catholic Nazi dystopia that existed prior to 1960.

I see the funeral mass is in the Pro Cathedral but no mention of location of burial.

I wonder if he's joining his former comrade Lord Wogan in the Alcor Cryochamber in Arizona. Also rumoured to await defrosting is Alan Rickman. MSM have been very obliging.

RTE are using his death as a means of convincing us that we need RTE to keep us out of the pit of religious ignorance .. and, of course, there's the small matter of the license fee increase.

They're absolutely shameless.

RTE are awful, but it's literally every radio station and every newspaper.

The same narrative being repeated ad nauseaum and everyone nodding their head in agreement: no serious reflection or balanced analysis; just banal groupthink - as per usual.

I find it hard to stomach tbh. I'd much rather walk the dog than listen to the bleating flock in Montrose.

I've had the pleasure of listening to none of it bar a very brief segment on yesterday's news.
Byrne was in the vanguard of "the liberal agenda", culminating in the Ireland we have today - an amoral society that has more in common with ancient Rome or Sparta than with a Christian civilisation.

SOME OF THE POSTS HERE ARE DEPLORABLE AND SERVE TO GIVE A GOOD INDICATION OF THE SHALLOWNESS OF THE GREAT MINDS ON THIS SITE .
Mr Byrnes family have him in the house as we write and he is not in Japan he is just up the road and his family will be aware of the terrible bullshit expressed here and elsewhere BY SOME ---NOT BY ALL THANKFULLY .
when you see some of the comments and you search for a valid reason for them there isn't any -
-the people who make them find a person who has impeccable diction and dress --is disciplined and gracious in a very middle class way with impeccable social manners and skills --
they find this very difficult to handle due to their own insecurity /rearing `- .
they would prefer we and our children spoke bad pidgin English were coarse in mind and manner --
were cool/laidback /what the f--k are you worried about --DOONT WORIE MAN B HAPY.
these morons would drag the Irish people backwards down the hole they crawled out of to grip a passing Irishman
and turn him into a pathetic figure crying into his pint blaming the Dublin 4 crowd and the likes of Byrne for their troubles .
they are the same people who will get all lawyered up if the bus and train/luas does not stop and go to perfection and their doctor /nurse cannot be less than perfect --
-all of the people serving their needs have to be professional speak well have a clean and tidy appearance --or else -
- the moron has to be allowed to swim in a sea of professionalism with paid attendants ready with lifebuoys at every hands turn.
Mr Byrne was not perfect --if you get it right 80% of the time you are a genius --he was a product of his time the 1950s and he worked very hard for what he got and was robbed twice in his life of every penny he had -
-nobody came to his aid he did not have a breakdown and he presented his show as normal -
-not something I could pull off .
he took an interest in public safety and used his fame to save Irish lives in his latter years --for which the morons here did not notice with a few exceptions .
he was a great Irishman --a great Irishman -
-he has a lovely family and leaves great memories --had he been a radical moron he would have achieved zero --
would not have lasted 6 minutes --
he spent over 30 years battelling each day with the management of RTE and every half baked politician in the country -
-he fought ignorance --coarseness -- bad diction --unprofessionalism --he lifted the performance of each performer that came his way for our benefit --
he never promoted the so called working class socialism expressed so badly here --it is not true socialism being ignorant and crude and coarse .
nor is it working class --I am working class I work 7 days a week so did he .
Ireland will miss his professionalism -- his diction -his middleclass manners and graciousness --
his elevation of Irish people on the radio and television--you came up several notches in your performance when speaking to Mr Byrne -- you were never --never -- never dumbed down / dragged down the hole of mediocrity where the envious/lazy /insecure morons on this site would take us if we let them .
good luck Gay --I don't normally drink whiskey but Friday I will raise a glass of Jameson to you.
for your elevation of the Irish
by allowing them to communicate /discuss/ agree/disagree in a gracious manner without malice for decades
and letting us find our way in a very Irish and stylish way . bugs
Don't you understand that the only people mourning him are the important ones. He's one of their own and they own the rights on this grief. Thats why no ordinary joes and I include my own elderly father and father in law never liked the guy. I take my cues from them. It's the lived experience.

I never liked him that much either

- my Dad hated him

But my parents always watched the LLE!

In fact IIRC they were once in the audience [1970s?]

That being said I think I was one of those who listened to him on perhaps his last public outing this day one year ago when he unveiled a plaque to The Beatles in Abbey St

- no doubt about it old sick and failing as he was he was a consummate performer.

He was only a mortal like us all

- and there is no doubt he worked hard for what he got

Left destitute after being cheated by his long time 'friend' RM he was taken to the cleaners again by the Banking collapse

- yet he got up off his ass and kept going...

OH BTW he was never a member of RTE!*

He worked under Contract to them.

* Neither was Gerry

Increasing the license fee will temporarily paper over the fault lines propagating throughout RTE.

What they need is a new business model and the only way to develop that is via privatisation. The current crop of dead wood don't want things changed. Dee-luded Forbes has pretty much stated that the only fix is to lump RTE's financial woes on the taxpayer. How innovative!
