I see the Gardaí have announced that their members are now free to wear hijabs and turbans on duty. Sadly, this wonderful cultural diversity does not extend to the Native Gael. Irish speakers are still being arrested for speaking their native language. Indeed, there was a case in court this week were an Irish speaker has actually been assaulted by a Garda for speaking Irish. The judge blamed the victim for provoking the Garda by speaking Irish to him - even though Irish speakers are supposed to have a constitutional right to speak the First Language with agents of the state.
Gardaí are to permit the wearing of turbans and hijabs as part of the garda uniform in an effort to encourage more people from minority communities to join the service.
