I'm only left to think that that was the plan all along, in fairness.
It mutated that way.
No one thought to ask the European people's what they wanted.
That approach might have given different opinions on the European project.

But maybe the European project was always that? Do you see that as a possibility?

No not initially.
But that's the way it progressed once the competency went beyond trade.

The Schuman (men in little hats) Declaration proves the EEC was always a stepping stone to greater integration

It proposed to place French and German production of coal and steel under one common High Authority. This organization would be open to participation of Western European countries. This cooperation was to be designed in such a way as to create common interests between European countries which would lead to gradual political integration, a condition for the pacification of relations between them: “Europe will not be made all at once, or according to a single plan. It will be built through concrete achievements which first create a de facto solidarity. The coming together of the nations of Europe requires the elimination of the age-old opposition of France and Germany”.

I think they likely always planned it to go this way.
However they had to boil the frog slowly so he wouldn't jump out of the pot!

The Rothschild movement in Europe (Centrists) is trying to make a play for control (our own FFG are allied with this group) some of the 'nationalist' movements opposing them are genuine and some are supported by dodgy US and Israeli agendas (Islamoparanoia).

But the fact is that indeed the world is turning into a few major power blocs, but a single power bloc EU will kowtow to the US as it has always done and so cannot be considered as an independent power bloc - and the problem with such huge centralised superstates is they work for the rich and the powerful and neglect the interests of their own people.
