The leader of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats in Europe (ALDE) told CNN that proposals by European populist-patriots to reform the EU and devolve power from Brussels back to the nation-state would mean that the bloc “will die inside.”

“The world is developing into one not of nation states, but of empires. China is an empire. India is an empire. The US is an empire. We need to create a European Union that is capable of defending our interests,” Mr Verhofstadt stated during the interview, speaking to the leftist American news network in what was described as his “spacious” Brussels office.

Mr Verhofstadt, who is also the European Parliament’s Brexit Coordinator, is an avid supporter of greater federalisation of the European Union.

During a Euronews Raw Politics panel last week, the former prime minister of Belgium compared a proposed United States of Europe to the United States of America, saying: “The United States of Europe is a way to organise a common action on the European level by recognising, by guaranteeing the autonomy of the member states.”

Other Eurocrats have also voiced support for a United States of Europe, including former president of the European Parliament and German socialist politician Martin Schulz who called for its formation by 2025.

This is why we need to vote for anti war eurosceptics as MEPs

We fought our way out of one Empire

& signed ourselves back into another....

But at last the Peoples of Europe are waking up to what the Elites have planned for them

Verhofstadt was put in his place by the EU powerful years ago:

EU Meeting Monday December 11 2000
We were now down to 29 votes for the big four, which was cutting down on reweighting, and the whole thing was not brilliant at all. It was taking a fair amount of strong arming to get the medium sized and the smaller countries to go for it. At one point TB* and Schroeder literally had [Guy] Verhofstadt [Prime Minister of Belgium] pinned into the corner of the room, his smile getting thinner and thinner as TB did the charm and Schroeder did the exasperation bordering on anger. Chirac was even more aggressive, at one point telling the Belgian foreign Minister he was a coward because they wouldn't take the deal. ...the last bits of haggling were done in the margins and largely by officials. Finally around 5AM it was all done.
The Blair Years: The Alastair Campbell Diaries
Tony Blair British - Prime Minister
Gerhard Schröder - German Chancellor
Jacques Chirac - French President

He obviously decided if you cant beat them

- you might as well join them!

The real tragedy of the EU.
If it had been clever and insisted on being an economic trading Organization exclusively, with all the attendant harmonisation of standards and tariffs required.
And it enforced free and fair trade .
It would have been a wonderfully successful and admired organization.
But that's hubris and over reach for you.

I don't think it's overreach, so much as it was a deception initially claiming to be just that in order to sell itself.

It was always intending to be this.

The original vision was to prevent any more conflicts by trade between nation's.
Respect rather than resentment between nation's and their people.
But the pragmatism and ideals of the founder members degraded into mediocre jobsworths enhancing their profile by expansion of the EEC beyond it's founding mission.
Prevent conflicts by trade.

Funny, that was my original interpretation of why it existed, just based on observation.

But I don't know at this stage if that was even ever a goal of it, such has been the cultural annihilation left in its wake.

That's seems to be the logic of the non entity types running the EU now.
A homogeneous bland non descript consumer population.
