Blog Dangers to free speech of corporate internet monopolies

  • Moderator

I have been saying for many years that activists should maintain
as much independence as possible from corporate internet tools while disseminating their message
and raising funds

It is far too easy for a corporate site to make a troublesome group or writer vanish overnight and
lose all of their material, funding and their audience, as, for example, shell to sea found when their facebook account was suddenly suspended. Or as wikileaks found when paypal froze their account.

The fact is these large internet Corporations are in bed with western imperialists. They get tacit government political support for massive tax breaks and deliberately created tax loopholes that enable them to pay < 2% tax rates in vassal states like Ireland and in return, whenever called upon, they do the bidding of their US masters by demonising the likes of Julian assange, RT etc and discouraging defunding and in general "disappearing" any individual or website which writes or posts articles that are not in lockstep with corporate and western imperialist interests.

There is a concerted effort currently underway by these corporations on behalf of the US,UK and EU to get RT off the air as they have presented information suppressed and ignored by western media and have allowed people to consider an alternative viewpoint which contrasts with the western propaganda version of events.

Another example targetted recently is the well known WSWS website
World Socialist Web Site - Marxist analysis, international working class struggles & the fight for socialism
which has been "disappeared" by alterations to the google search algorithm which has a huge effect on traffic to a website and consequent revenue. You can read all about that here:
Google escalates blacklisting of left-wing web sites and journalists
and here
An open letter to Google: Stop the censorship of the Internet! Stop the political blacklisting of the World Socialist Web Site!

Another example, the website "counterpunch", has always provided interesting articles questioning the status quo by high profile writers. Now this site too is at risk.

This recent article by a professional writer CJ Hopkins has highlighted how this behaviour by these corporate sites can insidiously undermine and eventually lead to the closure of crucial high quality alternative news sites like this:

Who’s Afraid of Corporate COINTELPRO?

Facebook, twitter and Google represent a serious threat to freedom of speech as between them they wield far too much power to shape our reality and they have all been caught abusing that power in concert with the amoral government of the US.

This thread is a place where I hope people can highlight, discuss and collate these many abuses to generate further awareness of the need to rein in and regulate the behaviour of both the US government and these giant internet companies through whom they wield an alarming totalitarian control over our very thoughts and what ideas and viewpoints we are allowed to be exposed to, which, when coupled with the techniques and programs of the NSA and CIA revealed by Edward Snowden and wikileaks, represent a level of surveillance and thought control that historical villains like the stasi secret police could only dream of in their wildest fantasies.

Anyway please read this excellent article:

Google, Facebook and Twitter are now doing a much more extreme job of spying on the population than the Stasi or KGB ever did. And they use their almost total control of the internet to shut down anyone the Régime wants shut down. I have little doubt that Facebook in particular was funded by the CIA from the very start. People thought that TOR was a good way of keeping messages private - until it emerged that TOR was actually funded by the US military.

US government increases funding for Tor, giving $1.8m in 2013

Good place to start researching all this:

CIA funded Facebook from its venture capital operation. It is actually quite a well known investment.

People thought that TOR was a good way of keeping messages private - until it emerged that TOR was actually funded by the US military.
People who knew about privacy and crypto knew that it was developed by the US government and defence.

The funny thing is that all this comes as a big surprise to people that have been relying upon technology "churnalists" (people who just recycle press releases) without any background in Technology.

The latest wheeze is IP address privacy using VPNs and IP privacy services. Yet if you read the Wikipedia link that GodsDog posted, they are far from private.

Twitter Warns Users: We’re Watching You

Twatter is just as bad as the rest.
They are politically policing their platform

“As part of our recent work to understand Russian-linked activities on Twitter during the 2016 U.S. presidential election,” read the email sent out by Twitter, “we identified and suspended a number of accounts that were potentially connected to a propaganda effort by a Russian government-linked organization known as the Internet Research Agency.”
Taking the guise of a friendly warning, Twitter continued, “Consistent with our commitment to transparency, we are emailing you because we have reason to believe that you either followed one of these accounts or retweeted or liked content from these accounts during the election period.”
In other words, Twitter is warning its users that it knows exactly what they are viewing and sharing on social media, implying that if they post something that falls afoul of the US government, they may be subject to investigation or prosecution.

Only recently they are caught with their digital pants down regarding widespread staff access to personal messages:

Amazing though, in spite of all the effort and investment put into spying on and preserving data on our every bowel movement for posteriority(!), they somehow manage to "lose" very crucial data which a court ordered them to preserve

NSA "Sincerely Regrets" Deleting All Bush-Era Surveillance Data It Was Ordered To Preserve

and of course all data on sensitive democrat saboteur conversations:

I honestly believe activists should refrain from the Internet altogether, it's certainly not the bastion of free speech or free and open debate. With companies like Google owning nearly everything that we need to use the net whose to say that even the browser you use right now hasn't been filled with spyware and back door trojans to your PC.

Indeed. I'm inclined to agree somewhat.
You certainly need to be very skeptical about what you read or view these days

And with the discovery of the spectre weakness (and of course the Intel "Management" Engine)
no personal computer will ever be really safe from hacking and spying for the foreseeable future

One wonders whether the downsides of using the internet and mobile phones for activism
has overshadowed the advantages they presents for organising.

In the old days it seemed far easier to get people motivated and out on the street where it really matters to support a worthy cause.

Now, in spite of all the corporate internet platforms available. it has become a real chore to do so. Pointless and easily ignored "clicktivism" seems to have replaced the real thing.

And if you do manage to motivate people to your cause, and are any way successful then the special branch have a convenient file on all your activities, your geographical location, your historical movements and they can likely get your funding and your website shut down overnight on a technicality with one phone call if they want to.

Not to mention the fact that all the misinformation and disinformation spewed onto the internet and onto our TV screens daily has so many people totally confused about what is really happening and what is not that they are quite paralysed and do not know what to believe any more.
