The SocDem candidate did surprisingly well - I suspect that it was the Ballincollig area of Cork city that he would have picked up most of his votes. Tara Nic Domhnaill of the Irish Freedom Party, a first time election candidate, got almost a thousand votes.
Aontú's Becky Kealy also did very well getting almost 3800 votes, 8.3% of the vote. Even though it voted for repeal of the 8th Amendment, traditionally this constituency has been fairly conservative and there is still a sizeable contingent of more conservative voters outside the Ballincollig area. Kealy's vote would contain a large Pro Life element in it.
