In the old days, important plays had an orchestra play an opening piece of music to set the right mood for the action. Beethoven wrote this in 1809 for a production of Goethe's great play Egmont. And by God it would have to be a great play to follow this. In the music for Egmont, Beethoven expressed his own political concerns through the exaltation of the heroic sacrifice of a man condemned to death for having taken a valiant stand against oppression.
