Taoiseach Addresses Anti-Immigration Protest and Commits to Reforming Military Deployment Policy
Taoiseach Micheál Martin downplayed concerns regarding a large anti-immigration protest in Dublin city centre, where participants frequently cited the housing crisis as a key issue. Speaking on Sunday, he challenged the negative rhetoric from the protest, stating, "Modern Ireland has made tremendous strides, offering opportunities that far surpass those available to previous generations. The narrative of decline pushed by some protesters does not reflect the reality of our progress." He emphasized that his government is not distracted by such demonstrations, adding, "We remain steadfast in our commitment to building a stronger, more inclusive Ireland, and we won’t be swayed by divisive voices."Martin acknowledged the housing crisis as "the defining social challenge of our time" but stressed that his administration is actively pursuing solutions. "We’re investing heavily in housing projects, streamlining planning processes, and working with local authorities to deliver homes for our people," he said. He pointed to recent initiatives, including increased funding for social housing, as evidence of progress. Reflecting on the recent General Election, Martin underscored the importance of democratic processes, noting, "The ballot box is the cornerstone of how we shape our society and choose our leaders. It’s through these mechanisms, not street protests, that we move forward."
