The decision to manufacture 5,000 air defence missiles in Belfast for Ukraine is a major development for the local workforce, according to DUP leader Gavin Robinson.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer confirmed that the lightweight multirole missiles (LMM) will be produced at the Thales weapons plant, creating 200 new jobs in the city.
"This will be vital for protecting critical infrastructure now and strengthening Ukraine in securing peace when the time comes," Mr. Starmer stated.
Speaking on the Good Morning Ulster programme, East Belfast MP Gavin Robinson described the announcement as highly significant, particularly given the current global tensions.
"It’s significant because of the recent turbulence in international relations, significant because of the role Thales has played in supporting Ukraine since before Russia’s invasion, and significant as it recognises the expertise and innovation of the Thales team," he said.
Thales has been a key supplier of weapons to Ukraine, and this latest order underscores the continued strategic importance of its operations in Belfast.
